Race season is in full swing, and it's the perfect time for both racers and spectators to feel the rush of excitement. Whether you’re revving up to tackle the dirt or cheering from the sidelines, packing smart will ensure a great experience at Northern Power Race Park! Below, we’ve created a detailed checklist designed specifically for racers and spectators, making sure you're all set for a day filled with action and enjoyment!

For the Racer

Gear Essentials

  1. Racing Gear: Your helmet, gloves, goggles, and fire suit (if required) are vital. Remember, safety is your number one priority!

  2. Racing Suit/Clothes: Whatever you wear when racing should be comfortable and durable.

  3. SXS/Pit Bike/Mud Toy: Ensure your side-by-side or off-road vehicle is ready to go. Check tire pressure, oil levels, and brakes the day before to avoid issues on race day.

  4. Fuel: Bring enough fuel for your vehicles. An extra can can save you from running low halfway through the day and stopping short of the finish line!

  5. Spare Parts: Check the trailer or the truck and make sure you have spares of all the essentials!

Extra Clothes and Footwear

  1. Change of Clothes: After an intense race, having a fresh outfit waiting can greatly enhance your comfort.

  2. Sturdy Shoes: Wear shoes that are both comfortable and protective, especially when walking in muddy or uneven areas.

  3. Rain Gear: If rain is expected, pack a waterproof jacket and pants. Be ready to race in any weather—racing days can be unpredictable!

  4. Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and wear a hat to protect yourself during sunny race days. UV rays can be strong, and sunburn can dampen your fun.

  5. Bug Spray: Northern Michigan comes with some extra fans of the flying, buzzing variety. Pack bug spray to keep mosquitoes and other pests from turning your race day into an itchy situation.

Fueling Up

  1. Snacks: Stock up on high-energy snacks like granola bars, nuts, or energy gels. These can sustain you through hours of excitement.

  2. Hydration: Bring enough water—aim for at least 2 liters for a full day. Dehydration can sneak up on you, especially under the sun.

  3. Appetite for Food Vendors: Come hungry—our food trucks serve up delicious track fuel to keep you going. From quick bites to comfort food favorites, there’s something tasty waiting for you between motos.

Miscellaneous Must-Haves

  1. Cash for Gate Fees: Don’t forget—gate entry is cash only! Admission typically ranges from $10–$25, depending on the event, so be sure to hit the ATM before heading our way.

  2. Tool Kit: A compact toolbox for last-minute fixes or adjustments can be a lifesaver. Bring basic tools like wrenches, screwdrivers, and tire levers.

  3. Ice Packs: Consider packing ice packs or instant cold packs to relieve sore muscles after an exhausting day on the track.

  4. Trash Bags: For dirty clothes, muddy boots, or keeping your pit area clean.

  5. Zip Ties & Duct Tape: Lifesavers for quick fixes.

For the Spectators

Go-to Gear

  1. Comfortable Seating: Bleachers and picnic tables are available, but bringing a foldable chair or blanket can make a big difference. A little extra padding goes a long way when you’re catching all the action between heats.

  2. Weather-Suitable Attire: Dress in layers suited for the weather that day. Check the forecast and prepare for temperature shifts, especially as evening approaches.

  3. Ear Protection: Protect your hearing and that of any young children with earplugs or noise-canceling headphones. Noise levels can reach over 100 decibels during races.

  4. Portable Phone Charger: No one wants a drained battery while trying to catch the racing action through their lens.

Snacks and Drinks

  1. Water and Beverages: Staying hydrated is essential! A cooler with plenty of drinks, including water and soft drinks, is a must-have.

  2. Snacks or Picnic: Pack your favorite snacks or create a small picnic to enjoy during breaks. Dips and veggies or sandwiches are easy to prepare and transport.

  3. Cash for Food Vendors: Although some food vendors accept cards, cash can make transactions quicker, especially when the lines get long.

Additional Considerations

  1. Camera or Binoculars: Capture the thrilling moments or enhance your view of the action. Binoculars can help you see the finer details of races from a distance.

  2. Sunscreen and Hats: Just like racers, spectators need protection from the sun too! Apply sunscreen regularly throughout the day.

  3. Light Jacket or Blanket: As the sun sets, temperatures often drop. Having a light jacket can keep you cozy and comfortable; temperatures can fall by more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit at night.

Final Touches

  1. Cash for Gate: Keep enough cash on hand for gate entry fees, which can range from $5 to $25 per person depending on the event.

  2. Plan Your Arrival Time: Arriving 1-2 hours early allows for easy parking and a good spot to set up your seating.

  3. Companions: Coordinate with friends or family about where to meet if you plan to split up. A designated spot can help avoid confusion later.
